Carbon Sequestered by Cameroon's Forests

High levels of carbon are sequestered by the dense forests of southern Cameroon.

Extent of Logging and Protected Areas, 1959-Present

In 1959, logging activity was concentrated in eastern Cameroon. Today, logging has affected nearly all of Cameroon's forests, even encroaching into protected areas.

Current Logging Concession Status, 1998-99

In 1997, active logging concessions covered 18 percent on Cameroon's forests. Abandoned concessions covered an additional 42 percent.

Cameroon has eight protected areas in the forested regions of the country.

The highest proportion of forests which have been logged are found in southern and southeastern Cameroon.

Six companies hold title to over 1.7 million hectares of logging concessions in Cameroon.

A high proportion of logging concessions active in 1997-98 had irregular activity.

Only one fourth of the UFA concessions allocated in 1997 appear to fully comply with the guidelines set by the new legislation.

In 1997, more than a third of Gabon's forests was allocated as logging concessions.

Global Forest Watch mapped 45 logging concessions that did not appear on official government maps.

Largest Concession Holders

One half of Gabon's concessions in 1997 were held by 5 percent of the concession owners.

Logging Concessions in Protected Areas

Concessions are actively being logged in many of Gabon's protected areas. A recent agreement has stopped logging in the Lope faunal reserve.
