Brazilian Amazon: Interactive Map

Acronyms

Supporters

This site is an ongoing collaboration between the World Resources Institute's Global Forest Watch Project and the Institute for Man and the Environment in the Amazon (Imazon). In this site, you will find spatial data layers and analyses about the Brazilian Amazon, and you will be able to query for specific information and print custom maps.

Available datasets are organized by themes. Individual layers within themes can be viewed by checking the box next to each layer and pre-selected queries (to the right) are also available. After selection, press START MAP to generate a map in a new window. From the map, you may add and subtract layers. Please feel free e-mail us if you have questions, comments or suggestions.

Human Pressure

These are the results of the analysis to assess human pressure on the Brazilian Amazon forests. The assessment overlays current available information about human activities in the Brazilian Amazon, aiming to provide insights of the dynamics at place. (more) (view the report "Human Pressure on the Brazilian Amazon Forests")

Forestry operations (IBAMA, 2000). No comprehensive data about the extent of impact of logging exists. However, you can view a location map of forestry operations authorized by IBAMA as of 2000. (more)

Forest fires with 10 km buffer, or Fire Zones (Imazon, 2004). Evidence of forest fires between 1996-2002, as identified by AVHRR satellite, with a 10 km buffer around them. It is the estimated that 10 km is the maximum distance a hunter would search for the most profitable prey from any given point of access. (more)

Urban zones with 20 km buffer (Imazon, 2004). Area estimated to be under pressure from urban population in municipal seats. (more)

Mineral reserves (IBGE) and areas licensed for mineral prospecting up to 1998 (DNPM). Mineral prospecting areas are not necessarily active but may become so if minerals of interest are found. (more)

Agrarian reform settlements established until 2002 (INCRA). Land distributed and land tenure regularized as of 2002. (more)

Vegetation and deforestation (Imazon, 2004). This dataset combines area deforested as of 2001 (INPE) with a vegetation map (IBGE, 1997). (more)

Pre-selected queries

View the area estimated under pressure from human settlements as of 2002.

View the area estimated to be subjected to incipient human pressure as of 2002.

View the estimated area subjected to incipient human pressure based on incidence of fires.
