In 2001, Kalimantan Timur had 12.6Mha of primary forest*, extending over 64% of its land area. In 2021, it lost 31.9kha of primary forest*, equivalent to 25.5Mt of CO₂ emissions.

*Much of the primary forest loss in Indonesia according to the GFW data is actually within areas that Indonesia classifies as secondary forest and thus outside forest that Indonesia classifies as primary. This is because the GFW primary forest definition is not consistent with Indonesia’s official primary forest definition and classification. GFW‘s statistics on loss of primary forests in Indonesia are therefore considerably higher than the official Indonesian statistics on deforestation in primary forests.
