View forest statistics for custom areas on a dashboard

GFW allows you to save, monitor and explore data for your areas of interest, whether you save a custom shape, an entire country or a subnational region. Once you save an area on the map, GFW produces a dashboard with interactive and customizable data charts that visualize forest statistics specific to that area. Below are steps for how you can view and customize this data.

  1. To access dashboards for areas saved to your My GFW account, first log in to My GFW by clicking “My GFW” on the top right of the GFW homepage. If you don’t have an account, click “Sign up” and follow the instructions.
Log in to My GFW to access the areas saved to your account.
  1. Once you log in, any areas you have saved will be listed on the webpage. You can edit and share areas, click “View on Map” to see them on the map, see the area’s GLAD deforestation alerts and VIIRS fire alerts in the latest week, and see whether you’re subscribed to receive alerts for specific areas.   2. To open a dashboard for a custom area, click on the area’s image.

  1. This is where you can see data charts with forest statistics for your custom area. When you are logged in to your My GFW account and are on the dashboard, green text will appear at the top left of the page.
    1. “Go to Global dashboard” leads to the default global dashboard. Learn how to view forest statistics for global, national and subnational areas on a dashboard here.
    2. “Go to Areas dashboard” leads to dashboards for your saved custom areas.
Click “Go to Global dashboard” to navigate to the global dashboard.
  1. If you would like to edit the name, assigned tags, email subscription options or language for the area, click on the pencil icon at the top right of the page.
  2. If you have multiple saved areas, you can access them by clicking on the drop-down menu that contains the name of the area you are viewing. Selecting the name of a different area will produce a dashboard with forest statistics for that area.
Click on the drop-down menu to access dashboards for other saved custom areas.
  1. Once you select an area, you can view a summary of forest statistics for that area under “Summary;” or you can select a category to see additional statistics related to land cover, forest change, land use, fires or climate. Not all categories will appear for all areas – dashboard pages only display categories that contain data for the area selected.
  2. Under each category, you will see interactive data charts displaying forest statistics. Each data chart contains a graphical representation of the data available in the area you selected.

  1. There are a few options for viewing more information about the data in a data chart.
    1. Click the information “i” icon on the top right of a data chart to learn more about the methodology, source, dates covered and more.
    2. Hover your mouse over a part of the data chart that interests you. An information box will appear with more information about that data point.
    3. Download the data for the entire dashboard by clicking the download icon on the top right of the dashboard or download the data for an individual data chart by clicking the download icon on the top right of a data chart. Learn more about how to download data from the dashboards here.

  1. If you want to customize and filter the data displayed on a data chart, click on the settings gear icon at the top right of a data chart and modify the settings as needed.

  1. To view the data on a specific data chart on the map to the right of the dashboard, click “Show on Map” on the top right of a data chart.
  2. To share the entire dashboard, click the share icon at the top right of the dashboard to generate a unique link to share with others. To share an individual chart, click on the share icon on the top right of any data chart to generate a unique link to share with others, or generate HTML to embed the data chart within an external website.
Click the share icon and copy the link to share with others.
