Add data to an organizational ArcGIS Online account

Before creating a MapBuilder application, you must first create a web map with data layers. The steps below explain how you can publish a shapefile as a feature service to ArcGIS Online so that it can be added as a data layer on your web map.

  1. To add data from your desktop to an organizational ArcGIS Online account, click “Content” on the top menu, then click “Add Item.” From here, select “From my computer.”
Click “Content” then click “Add Item” and select “From my computer.”
  1. Select the shapefile or other GIS data layer that you’d like to upload. When uploading a shapefile, all shapefile components must be zipped into a single folder.
  2. Give the shapefile a title and add any applicable tags, then click “Add Item.”
Upload a shapefile and add any relevant information then click “Add Item.”
  1. You have now created a hosted feature service on ArcGIS Online. You can add a brief summary, description, terms of use and credits to the feature service by clicking the edit icon to the right of the item you’d like to edit. This information will be used as metadata in your MapBuilder application.
Click “Edit” to add any additional information to the feature service.
  1. To share the hosted feature service publicly, click “Share” on the right and ensure that “Everyone (public)” is selected. Once complete, click “Save.”
Click “Share” and select “Everyone (public)” then click “Save.”
  1. Return to step one to upload additional shapefiles.
