<p>The map & dashboards on GFW allow you to explore hundreds of spatial datasets that help explain when, where and why forests are changing around the world.</p>



<p>The <a href="https://www.globalforestwatch.org/map/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">map</a> helps tell a visual story about what’s happening to forests in a particular place. Zoom in anywhere in the world to explore how forests are changing, how they’re managed and the values they provide. Layer data – like annual tree cover loss, land use data and satellite imagery – to better understand the underlying causes and impacts of forest change. <p>The Forest Watcher mobile application enables offline use of deforestation and fire alerts, so you can monitor and manage forests while in the field directly from a smartphone. With the mobile app, you can set up an area of interest, download and navigate to alerts, customize basemaps, track your routes and investigate and report what you find even if you don’t have internet connectivity. You can also access Forest Watcher Web online from your computer for even more options. Additionally, you can sync areas of interest between Forest Watcher and <a href="https://www.globalforestwatch.org/my-gfw/">MyGFW</a>. </p>



<p>There are two ways to access Forest Watcher:&nbsp;</p>

<p>The mobile app is designed for field patrols and investigations of recent forest clearing or fires. The app can be used almost entirely offline (though connection may occasionally be required to download new cloud-based data, such as alerts or contextual layers). You will automatically be logged out of your profile and will have to log back in.</li><li><strong>Browser compatibility</strong>: Pro is compatible with the latest two versions of Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge. You must use one of these browsers to access Pro.</li><li><strong>Internet connectivity</strong>: A wired Internet connection with at least 10 MBPS upload and download speed is recommended. Test your speed here. Avoid utilizing a VPN if possible.</li><li><strong>Number notation</strong>: Pro will automatically match the number notation format of your data with the language of your browser. <p>The following data sets provide a global perspective on some of the most critical types of forests and land cover to understand forest change and areas at risk of deforestation. <p>Global Forest Watch (GFW) offers the latest data that enables people everywhere to better manage and conserve different types of land cover. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Introduction</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>Forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle and mitigating climate change, acting as carbon sinks through sequestration or as carbon sources when they are lost or degraded. Global Forest Watch (GFW) offers a variety of geospatial data and tools that enable users to monitor carbon dynamics in forests across both time and space at 30-meter resolution. The climate data can be divided into three categories:&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Carbon Fluxes</strong>: Track forest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, removals (sequestration) and net flux with data sets that are the products of our geospatial forest carbon flux monitoring framework (Harris et al. 2021). This data tracks GHG fluxes at approximately 30-meter resolution from 2001 onwards and is updated annually. &nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<ul>
<li><strong>Carbon Density</strong>: This data displays aboveground live woody biomass density in the year 2000, which can be used to derive carbon stocks. It is a useful benchmark for carbon storage at the beginning of the century.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<ul>
<li><strong>Potential Carbon Gains</strong>: This data estimates the rates at which young forests that are naturally regenerating would capture carbon from the atmosphere and store it as aboveground live biomass over the first 30 years of regrowth.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

<p>GFW’s climate data is used by researchers, policymakers, non-profit organizations, local conservation organizations, companies and others interested in monitoring forest carbon dynamics across the globe. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Types of Data Sets</strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Carbon Fluxes: Forest GHG emissions, carbon removals, GHG net flux </em></strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The GFW data based on the geospatial forest carbon flux monitoring framework maps forests’ gross GHG emissions, gross carbon removals (sequestration), and the difference between them or net flux. It combines global geospatial data sets using IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories to estimate emissions and removals separately:&nbsp;</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Emissions</strong> are derived from overlaying stand-replacing forest disturbances with carbon density and other contextual geospatial data.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<ul>
<li><strong>Removals </strong>are derived from overlaying forest extent and forest gain with carbon accumulation rates for different forest types.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<p>Where gross emissions exceed gross removals, the net GHG flux value is positive, and forests are referred to as <em>net sources</em>. Where removals exceed emissions, the net GHG flux value is negative, and forests are considered <em>net sinks</em>. &nbsp;</p>



<p>All three data sets are reported as cumulative from 2001-2023. Emissions data can be tracked annually using information from the <a href="https://data.globalforestwatch.org/documents/941f17325a494ed78c4817f9bb20f33a/explore" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">year of tree cover loss</a>. Removals and net flux cannot be assigned to individual years but can be divided by number of years to calculate annual averages. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Carbon Density </em></strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>GFW offers a global, 30-meter resolution map of woody aboveground biomass (AGB) for the year 2000. It was created using a combination of forest plot data, lidar data and satellite imagery. Because it represents forest biomass from over 20 years ago, it is not necessarily representative of forest biomass now. However, it is useful as a reference point for historical biomass from the beginning of the century. Aboveground carbon density can be approximated from AGB by multiplying values by a biomass to carbon ratio of 0.47. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The rate at which forests convert atmospheric carbon dioxide into aboveground biomass as they grow is referred to as the <em>carbon sequestration rate</em> or<em> removal factor</em> (megagrams of carbon per hectare per year). Forest sequestration rates depend on a number of factors such as species, region, climate, prior land use, management and age. &nbsp;</p>



<p>This <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-020-2686-x" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">global map</a> estimates the rate at which carbon could be sequestered in aboveground live biomass during the first thirty years of naturally regenerating forest to calculate gross removals in young secondary forests. It was made by aggregating aboveground biomass forest plot data at different forest stand ages and interpolating growth rates globally using machine learning. <p>Forests play an important role in the global carbon cycle and mitigating climate change, acting as carbon sinks through sequestration or as carbon sources when they are lost or degraded. Global Forest Watch (GFW) offers a variety of geospatial data and tools that enable users to monitor carbon dynamics in forests across both time and space at 30-meter resolution. The climate data can be divided into three categories:&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<li><strong>Carbon Fluxes</strong>: Track forest greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, removals (sequestration) and net flux with data sets that are the products of our geospatial forest carbon flux monitoring framework (Harris et al. 2021). This data tracks GHG fluxes at approximately 30-meter resolution from 2001 onwards and is updated annually. &nbsp;</li>

<li><strong>Carbon Density</strong>: This data displays aboveground live woody biomass density in the year 2000, which can be used to derive carbon stocks. It is a useful benchmark for carbon storage at the beginning of the century.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Carbon Fluxes: Forest GHG emissions, carbon removals, GHG net flux </em></strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>The GFW data based on the geospatial forest carbon flux monitoring framework maps forests’ gross GHG emissions, gross carbon removals (sequestration), and the difference between them or net flux. It combines global geospatial data sets using IPCC guidelines for national greenhouse gas inventories to estimate emissions and removals separately:&nbsp;</p>



<ul>
<li><strong>Emissions</strong> are derived from overlaying stand-replacing forest disturbances with carbon density and other contextual geospatial data.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<ul>
<li><strong>Removals </strong>are derived from overlaying forest extent and forest gain with carbon accumulation rates for different forest types.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>



<p>Where gross emissions exceed gross removals, the net GHG flux value is positive, and forests are referred to as <em>net sources</em>. Where removals exceed emissions, the net GHG flux value is negative, and forests are considered <em>net sinks</em>. &nbsp;</p>



<p>All three data sets are reported as cumulative from 2001-2023. Emissions data can be tracked annually using information from the <a href="https://data.globalforestwatch.org/documents/941f17325a494ed78c4817f9bb20f33a/explore" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">year of tree cover loss</a>. Removals and net flux cannot be assigned to individual years but can be divided by number of years to calculate annual averages. <h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong><em>Carbon Density </em></strong>&nbsp;</h2>



<p>GFW offers a global, 30-meter resolution map of woody aboveground biomass (AGB) for the year 2000. It was created using a combination of forest plot data, lidar data and satellite imagery. Because it represents forest biomass from over 20 years ago, it is not necessarily representative of forest biomass now. However, it is useful as a reference point for historical biomass from the beginning of the century. Aboveground carbon density can be approximated from AGB by multiplying values by a biomass to carbon ratio of 0.47. &nbsp;</p>
